CAR TRAVEL FOR DOGS This is a new page in our website due to the fact I am asked about this all the time. This is always one hot topic for people as they worry about how to transport their pet. Their are three safe ways of transporting your pet. A dog should be restrained. By either a harness designed for a dog, a car crate as shown below. Or you can have a car dog guard which goes behind your seat, or a car guard and a tail gate. A tail gate is a mesh which stops dogs jumping out the car. Or you
If you take a 7 week old puppy and just throw it in the boot of the car loose with a big area and set off, you could create a car sick puppy. A puppy must be restrained somehow, for eg, on your lap for a few short journeys to stroke and tell the puppy that it is ok. Obviously being passenger, and not driving! Or in its harness on the back seat stroking the puppy. Placing in small crate to restrain the dog. Putting the puppy in its harness. Motion is what causes sickness in dogs. So make sure your dog can not be thrown around in a large space. Always make sure their is a reward at the end of the journey such as a good walk, or going to grandma's house where its lavished treats and love. Remember that if you just sit the puppy loose on the seat you wont have control of your vehicle. Their are laws with dogs and travel. See defra website "No person shall transport any animal in a way which causes or is likely to cause injury or unnecessary suffering to that animal"! http://www.defra.gov.uk/publications/files/pb10308-dogs-cats-welfare-060215.pdf
Dogs should be housed adequately, they should not be placed in a vehicle that has been left in the sunshine and it should be aired first. They should not be in direct sunlight. They should not be left unattended. They should not be left in the vehicle with no windows open. Be aware of heat stroke. They should not be left free in a vehicle with window down so they can jump out when stationary or moving. They should not be left free in the vehicle to run around so they can chew seats, wires etc. A small dog and cat must be housed in a crate so it can not move too much when it goes around corners in cars. Animals are not allowed to be taken and sold from the car. You should not feed your pet before a journey as it can make it feel sick. Ventilation at all times must be in the vehicle whilst transporting the pet. A dog should not be transported if it has given birth 48 hours previously. Or if it is heavily pregnant. A pet must not travel for more than 12 hours with out allowing to be fed, or walked, or allowed to go to the toilet. This journey would be rare in the UK though as most owners have no more than a 10 hour journey. Stop let your pet out, walk it around, give it a drink and back in the car again. This and more is contained in Defra's website.
Rules to remember: Restrain your dog in the vehicle. Make sure their is adequate ventilation and not direct sunlight. Do not leave your pet unattended in the vehicle.
Useful sites for buying car guards, tailgates and crates. Do not contact us for sizes on crates, please contact directly the companies you are going to buy your crate from as they have a better idea of sizes for dogs. www.barjo.co.uk http://www.mmgguards.co.uk/ http://www.croftonline.co.uk/
