Uk breeders of Weimaraner and Hungarian Vizsla Hip Dysplasia
I am sure most of you will of heard of Hip Dysplasia even if you are not sure what it is. A really good link to read further: http://www.vizsla.org.uk/hips.htm Most people straight away think of German Shepherds when they associate Hip Dysplasia with a dog. But in fact all dogs can get Hip Dysplasia, and it is a hereditary condition. It is a fact that more dogs over the weight over 30Kg suffer more than dogs under. Hip Dysplasia can be brought on by poor diet, and the wrong kind of exercise from young pups. Also jumping fences too young. Over weight dogs. Even injury can give a poor hip score. Or they can have hereditary Hip Dysplasia. Hip Dysplasia affects dogs more commonly after 5 years of age, however some are first seen at approx 1 years of age. Some dogs have HD to a degree mild and some have it severe. Hip Dysplasia is a disease that affects the dogs hip joints. Trying to put it in simple terms the joint is a ball and socket joint and can simply displace from the joint. Crumble away, and some times its actual bone wear. Not all dogs with HD are lame. Some appear fit and healthy and have no seen lameness, their ligaments may be strong and holding the joint well, but they still have this disease. Others are lame, and its so severe that legs have to be amputated. Sometimes a dog is not lame, but it is showing a bad temperament, but after doing some tests, H.D has been the reason the dog has a bad temperament. So how do we detect Hip Dysplasia in dogs. Well their is only one way.. So how do we detect Hip Dysplasia in dogs. Well their is only one way. An x-ray which your vet will take. He will then send it off to the BVA to be scored. If you are a pet owner and your vet wants to know if your dog has Dysplasia he will x-ray the hips and he will not submit scores to the BVA as he is only looking from a health view. Hip Dysplasia can be detected by having the dogs bones x-rayed. Good breeders will have their breeding dogs and bitches hip scored. This is a test done, by x-ray and the plates that are taken are sent to the B.V.A in London, This panel of kennel club vets look at the plates, and give it a mark or score. This cannot be done until the dog is 12 months old, because the bones are still growing. Also it cannot be done on dogs that are not Kennel Club registered because it is scored by "British veterinary association/kennel club hip dysplasia scheme". http://www.bva.co.uk/public/chs/hip_scheme.asp Each breed has a mean average. The Weimaraners is 13. The Hungarian Vizsla 12. Each hip is scored out of 53 points. Both hips added together would be 106 points. Each breed has a BMS (British Mean Score) The Weimaraners is 13 so that would look something like 6:7 on a dog. Obviously the lower the score the better. But breeders can breed over the breed average score. If the score is just outside the breed average range yet an even score the dog can still be bred to a low hip score dog. Sometimes an accident which has nothing to do with HD can result in the hip joint being a higher score on one leg. Speak to your breeder if you have any concerns. If a dog has a score of zero zero it means it has no hip dysplasia what so ever. Anything past a zero is in fact to a degree bone wear. Of course its rare to get such low scores. If you are thinking about having your dog or bitch hip scored, speak first of all to your veterinary surgeon. Many people are worried about having a General anaesthetic done on their dog, with good reason. Some dogs can be very ill or die from a GA. Your vet is the best person to talk to. We have our dogs just sedated. Prices of Hip Scoring varies from vet to vet. The cheapest I have heard is £72 and the most expensive I have heard is £190-00. Speak to your vets is the only advice I can offer you. Prices seem to rise all the time, and our last hip score done was £190. If you are a vet reading this I would plead that you keep your prices down so that it encourages breeders to health test their dogs, rather than put people off having this test done. Some people will take their dogs to a chiropractor first before hip scoring to obtain a better result, by aligning the hips together. If you are however worried that your bitch may react to a GA. Just bear a thought in mind. What would happen if your bitch had to have a Caesarean section ? You could not only loose your bitch but all her puppies. So before you go ahead with breeding any concerns at all about G.A must be talked too with your own vet. Here is a chart showing you the BMS for some gundogs at 1/1/04 By the B.V.A If in doubt always seek a veterinary surgeons advice. Click Here to return to top of page Remember if you care about your dog and care about the pups they produce you should have your dog hip scored if the breed is pre disposed to Hip Dysplasia. Their is no excuse to skip tests.
